Çeşme sits at the tip of a peninsula 85 km west of İzmir and 10 km from the Greek island of Chios, so it works as both a beach base and a ferry port. The town itself is small — a castle, an old quarter and a waterfront strip — while the beaches, thermal springs and the village of Alaçatı spread along the coast. Most visitors are Turkish; international travellers usually pass it by for Bodrum or Marmaris.

Getting around

Dolmuşes link Çeşme, Alaçatı and the outlying hotel strips; buses and dolmuşes from İzmir run frequently around the clock, about 30 min on the O-32. The otogar is south of the centre. A car helps for the beaches and Çiftlik.

Stone houses and cobbled streets inland; a base for windsurfing and a quieter evening than the town centre.

Çiftlik and Altınkum

Watch out

Safety

Çeşme is a calm resort town and violent crime is rare. The real issues are summer heat, rip currents on windy beach days, and beach clubs or bars with no posted prices: ask before you order.
  • Beach clubs and some waterfront bars do not post prices: ask the total before you sit.
  • Summer traffic on the peninsula is heavy; allow extra time for the İzmir airport run.
  • Winter ferry sailings to Chios are fewer and catamarans are more easily disrupted by rough seas than the standard vessels.
  • The Lavrion (Athens) ferry has not resumed; do not plan around it.
