Nyika National Park
Spend 2–3 nights on the plateau: drive a 4×4 from Mzuzu (6 h on dirt) or fly to Chelinda Lodge; hike the grasslands for zebra and antelope, ride a horse, and see orchids from December to March; the park is Malawi's largest and has one of the highest leopard densities in Central Africa, but you need a guide for any walk away from the lodge.

- Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
- Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
- Southern Africa ↗A rental car may leave its home country only with the rental company's cross-border letter, the registration papers and paid road taxes at each post; driving into Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique or Angola without them ends at the border.
- Southern Africa ↗Across the subregion, plan every road leg to arrive before sunset: livestock, wildlife, pedestrians and unlit trucks make night driving the main cause of serious visitor accidents.
- Malawi ↗Malawi dropped its 2024 visa waiver for most Western passports in January 2026; confirm your rule on the official Malawi immigration e-visa portal before you book, not on agent sites.
- Malawi ↗Dress modestly away from lodges: shoulders and knees covered in villages and towns.
- Malawi ↗Do not photograph government buildings, police, the military or airports.

Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Nyika National Park?
Park entry is about US$10–20 per person per day (2026 estimate), plus a vehicle fee of US$10–20 per day. Pay at the gate in US$ or MWK. Guided walks cost about US$5–10 per person per hour.
What are the best hikes in Nyika National Park?
The best walks are guided walks from Chelinda to the escarpment waterfalls (2–3 h), the orchid walk (2–3 h, December–March), and longer day hikes on the northern plateau (4–6 h). All require a park guide.
When is the best time to visit Nyika National Park?
The best time is the dry season from April to October. April–June offers green landscapes and good game viewing; July–August is cool and clear. The wet season (December–March) is best for orchids but roads are muddy.
Can I drive to Nyika National Park without a 4×4?
No. The roads from Mzuzu and Rumphi are rough dirt tracks; a 4×4 with high ground clearance is essential. Standard cars will get stuck, especially in the wet season.
Is Nyika National Park safe for solo travellers?
Yes, but you need a guide for any walk. Game drives are safe if you stay in the vehicle. The park is remote; carry enough fuel, water and food.
Can I see leopards in Nyika National Park?
The park has one of the highest leopard densities in Central Africa, but sightings are not guaranteed. Night drives improve your chances. Ask your guide for the best areas.
