Ungaran is the capital of Semarang Regency, 25 km south of Semarang on the lower slopes of Mount Ungaran, so it sits higher and runs a few degrees cooler than the coast. It is a town of food specialities (tahu bakso, soto gudangan, beef satay), one Hindu temple complex, one colonial fort and a couple of short waterfall walks. Most travellers see it as a day trip from Semarang or a first night on the road to Ambarawa, Bandungan and Salatiga.

Getting around
Trans Semarang corridor 2 links Sisemut terminal with Semarang; TransJateng buses run along the main road. Ojek and ride-hailing (Gojek, Grab) are the practical way to reach Candi Ngempon and the waterfalls. Downtown pavements are patchy — walk with care on roads without a sidewalk.
See & do
Day-trips, door to door
Day-trips
Door to door: 45–75 min
Trans Semarang corridor 2 from Sisemut terminal, or a car on Route 20 / the Trans-Java toll
Old Town, Sam Poo Kong and the food scene; go early to beat the toll-road traffic.
Door to door: 30–50 min
Car or ride-hailing south via Bandungan, or a bus toward Magelang
Railway museum and Rawa Pening; pairs well with Ungaran in one day.
Salatiga
goDoor to door: 45–60 min
Car or bus south on the Semarang–Solo road
Cooler hill town with a market and campus cafés.
Demak
cautionDoor to door: 1.5–2 h
Car north via Semarang, or bus with a change
Great Mosque is the draw; long for a half-day from Ungaran.
Grobogan
cautionDoor to door: 1.5–2 h
Car east on the Semarang–Solo toll road
Better as an overnight if you want the temples and hot springs.
Kendal, Indonesia
skipDoor to door: 1.5–2 h
Car west via Semarang, or bus along the north coast road
No clear half-day win from Ungaran; go only if you already have a reason.

Which area to sleep in
Where to sleep
Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
West Ungaran (Jl. Diponegoro corridor)
Hotels, bakeries and the satay and steak restaurants; walkable in parts, 5–10 min between most stops.
Around Sisemut bus terminal
Trans Semarang corridor 2 terminus; cheapest guesthouses, useful if you arrive by bus.
Keji / Mapagan hillside
Villa-style stays in Javanese joglo houses; you need a car or ride-hailing for everything.

Watch out
Safety
- Rainy-season afternoons flood the main road; keep electronics in a dry bag.
- Temple and fort sites have no reliable posted hours — check locally before you ride out.
- Ride-hailing cars sometimes refuse the Ngempon run; agree the fare or take an ojek.
- Scooter rental without an international permit is a risk: police checks and no insurance cover.

- Place pages with verified cutoffs (Candi Ngempon, Benteng Willem II, Wana Wisata Penggaron) and eat pages with last orders.
- Rain and hostile-arrival fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
