Tamale is Ghana's third-largest city and the capital of the north, a low-rise, spread-out hub of mud-brick compounds, mosques and markets on the road to Mole, Paga and Burkina Faso. Most travellers pass through for one or two nights: fly in from Accra, sleep in town, then push on to Mole or the Upper East. The city itself is a launch pad, not the destination.

Getting around

Yellow-yellow motorised rickshaws are everywhere and a shared ride across town costs about GH₵6 or less — say 'shared' before you get in or the price jumps. Red-and-yellow taxis are metered in theory only: agree the fare before loading bags. Distances are short but the city is spread out, so budget for a ride to most sights.

Watch out

Safety

Tamale is generally calm and welcoming, but it is a big northern city: agree fares before you ride, avoid chieftaincy politics in conversation, and do not walk unlit roads at night. Check your government's current advice for the northern regions before you travel.
  • Agree every taxi and rickshaw fare before you start; there is no working meter system.
  • Roadside food stalls carry a real risk of upset stomachs — eat food that is still hot.
  • Avoid discussing Dagbon chieftaincy disputes or local conflicts; greet people first and keep politics out of it.
  • Top up cash and supplies before heading to smaller towns; ATM coverage outside Tamale is thin.
  • The sun is fierce from March to May — carry water and cover up.
