Milwaukee

Give Milwaukee 2 nights: one for downtown and the lakefront, one for a brewery or festival. Add a night only if Summerfest or a game is on.

Milwaukee is Wisconsin's largest city, on the west shore of Lake Michigan about 90 mi (145 km) north of Chicago. It is a beer-and-festival city with a compact downtown, a free streetcar and a lakefront that fills up from June to September. Most visitors come for two nights, often as a stop on the Chicago–Milwaukee rail line.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Watch out

Safety

Downtown and the main visitor areas are busy and generally fine in daylight. Use normal city sense after dark, avoid empty blocks near the river, and keep to lit main streets. Winter cold is the bigger practical risk.
  • Cash fares need exact change; drivers do not give change.
  • Winter is long and cold: six months are cold, overcast and wet, and snow can fall in early April.
  • Summer lakefront festival days fill hotels — book ahead (check).
  • Some downtown bar areas are quiet or rough late at night; stay on lit main streets.
  • The city is highly segregated; a few blocks can change the feel. Ask your hotel which streets to use after dark.
