Rules in force · 9Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Italy and Malta ↗The region's headline sights run on timed tickets that sell out: book the Vatican Museums, the Colosseum, the Uffizi, the Last Supper and Malta's Hypogeum before you fix train and hotel dates.
- Italy and Malta ↗Budget for per-night city taxes in Italy (up to about €10 a person in Rome), Malta's per-night environmental contribution, and Venice's day-visitor fee on peak days; none are included in most online room prices.
- Malta ↗Malta is in the EU and the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border.
- Malta ↗Traffic drives on the left; if you hire a car, expect narrow roads, heavy traffic and limited parking in the towns.
- Malta ↗Sockets are the UK three-pin type (Type G); bring the right adapter.
- Malta ↗Every licensed stay adds an environmental contribution per adult per night (€1.50 from 1 July 2026, capped per stay — check), collected by the hotel or host.
- Valletta and the Grand Harbour ↗Harbour ferries run on their own timetable and stop in rough weather: check the day's service before you rely on one.

Decide
Who it suits, the trade-offs and when to go
Overview
The city in one paragraph, who it fits, and how many days it takes.
Valletta is a fortified grid on a narrow peninsula: everything worth seeing is within 1 km, but the side streets are stepped and there is little shade. The airport is about 6 km away by taxi or bus. What goes wrong is the summer sun, cruise-ship days when Republic Street is full from about 10:00, and Sunday closures. Four short areas cover a first visit; sleep here for the evenings, when the town empties out.
Fits
- History and fortress lovers
- Short city breaks with harbour views
- Evening walks after the day-trippers leave
Does not fit
- Wheelchairs and strollers on the steps
- Midday walkers in July and August
- Beach-first trips (the beaches are elsewhere on the island)
- 2 days
- Republic Street and the Barrakka gardens, Fort St Elmo the next morning
- 3 days
- Four areas on foot, one harbour ferry afternoon
- 5 days
- Four areas + Three Cities by ferry + Mdina half day
- Don't confuse
- Valletta is the walled capital on the peninsula; Floriana is the suburb outside its main gate, and Sliema lies across Marsamxett Harbour by ferry.
Hover, tap or tab to an area to see what it is like. Pins are sleep areas; arrows at the edge point to the airport.
Off the map: Malta International Airport, Luqa (MLA) (15–30 min by the usual route).
Where’s what, as a list:
- Republic Street, St John's & Upper Barrakka: The core: St John's Co-Cathedral, the Grandmaster's Palace and the Upper Barrakka Gardens along and beside Republic Street; go early, before the cruise groups.
- City Gate, Castille & the Triton Fountain: The entrance: the new City Gate, Parliament, the Triton Fountain and Castille Place; the bus terminus is here, so arrive or leave through it.
- Fort St Elmo & the National War Museum: The far end of the peninsula: Fort St Elmo and the war museum with views to both harbours; a long, shadeless walk, so go in the morning.
- Floriana & Independence Garden: The suburb outside the gate: gardens, the Granaries and hotels with car access; use it for a quiet base or an evening walk.
- Sleep area Floriana: suits Families, older travellers, price band $$.
- Sleep area Valletta: suits Families, solo on a budget, price band $$.
- Malta International Airport, Luqa (MLA), 15–30 min by the usual route.
Decide
The honest trade-off: what you will enjoy, what will wear you down.
You will like
- Fortress views over two harbours
- Short walks, a lot of history
- Evenings without crowds
You will hate
- Midday sun and no shade
- Steps and cobbles
- Cruise-ship crowds
