Il-Belt Valletta

Valletta is a morning-and-evening capital: do Republic Street and the Barrakka gardens early, rest through the midday sun, and cross the harbour by ferry for the Three Cities or Sliema.

Valletta is a fortified grid on a narrow peninsula: everything worth seeing is within 1 km, but the side streets are stepped and there is little shade. The airport is about 6 km away by taxi or bus. What goes wrong is the summer sun, cruise-ship days when Republic Street is full from about 10:00, and Sunday closures. Four short areas cover a first visit; sleep here for the evenings, when the town empties out.

Language

Maltese and English are both official, and English is used on signs, menus and in business, so language is rarely an obstacle. Maltese is a Semitic language written in the Latin alphabet with many Italian and English loanwords; locals switch between the three mid-sentence.

  • Useful words: bonġu (good morning), grazzi (thank you), jekk jogħġbok (please), saħħa (goodbye/cheers).
  • Maltese letters ċ, ġ, ħ and ż matter in place names: Ħaġar Qim is 'haj-ar eem'.
  • Italian is widely understood thanks to Italian television.

  • Greeting: A handshake; 'bonġu' or good morning; avoid: Assuming Malta is 'like Italy' or 'like Britain' — it is its own country
  • Churches: Dress modestly and keep quiet; avoid: Flash photos during services
  • Festas: Join the crowds and street food; avoid: Standing in front of the band or statue procession
  • Politics: Listen; avoid: Taking sides between Labour and Nationalist supporters in public
  • Driving: Expect sudden stops and narrow lanes; avoid: Road rage — it escalates fast

Red lines

  • Churches, including St John's Co-Cathedral: shoulders and knees covered, no flash photography.
  • Do not climb on the bastion walls or barriers.
  • Tap water is safe but often brackish; most visitors drink bottled water.

Scams (Malta page)

  • Overpriced Blue Lagoon boats and sunbeds: Compare the licensed operators' posted prices; bring your own shade — sunbed rentals on Comino are controversial and capped.
  • Unmetered taxi fares: Use the airport's fixed-fare kiosk or a ride-hailing app with the price shown upfront.
  • Drink spiking and inflated bar bills: Watch your drink; avoid bars with touts pulling people in.
  • Fake EES or ETIAS 'registration' sites: EES is free at the border; ETIAS only on travel-europe.europa.eu when it opens.
  • Timeshare and 'free gift' promoters: Walk on; the gift is a sales presentation.
