Ko Sire

Visit Ko Sire for a half‑day trip to see Wat Ko Si‑Re and the sea‑gypsy village; no overnight stay needed.

Ko Sire is a 20 km² island off Phuket, joined to the city by a causeway across the Khlong Tha Chin mangrove channel. Its two draws are the hilltop Wat Ko Si-Re, with a large reclining Buddha and wide views, and Phuket's largest sea-gypsy (Chao Le) settlement at Laem Tuk-Kae. The seabed is muddy, so it is not a swimming island. Sources do not cover lodging here: check before you plan to stay.

Getting around

The causeway carries the road onto the island; distances are short but transport details are not confirmed in sources: check locally. A rented scooter or a taxi from Phuket Town is the usual way in.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 30–40 min

Songthaew or taxi across the causeway, then into the old town

Sino-Portuguese streets, markets and the best food base for a Ko Sire half-day.

Door to door: About 30 min

Taxi or rented scooter south along Route 4021

Pier for island boats; pairs with Ko Sire on the same loop.

Door to door: About 40 min

Taxi south-east past Chalong

Quiet bay and aquarium; short add-on after the causeway.

Patongcaution

Door to door: About 50–60 min

Taxi across the island via Route 4029

Beach and nightlife, but the drive eats the afternoon: go only if that is your base.

Katacaution

Door to door: About 50 min

Taxi south via Chalong

Better as a separate beach day than a Ko Sire add-on.

Safety

Ko Sire is a quiet residential island and feels safe in daylight; the real risks are the slippery mangrove causeway after rain, unlit lanes after dark, and muddy water that is not for swimming. Use 191 police, 1669 ambulance, 1155 tourist police.
  • The seabed around the island is muddy: this is not a swimming stop.
  • The causeway crosses a shallow mangrove channel; conditions after heavy rain are not documented: check.
  • Sources list no lodging and few services on the island: check food and water before you go.
