Djenné
One full day and one night: arrive Monday morning for the market, see the Great Mosque, leave Tuesday morning. A half-day trip from Mopti is possible but rushed.
Djenné is a small, dusty town on the Bani River, home to the world's largest mud-brick building, the Great Mosque. Its Monday market is one of West Africa's great spectacles. The town is a UNESCO World Heritage site, but facilities are basic and the security situation in central Mali is volatile. Most travellers visit as a day trip from Mopti or Sévaré, or stay one night to catch the market.

- Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
- Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
- West Africa ↗Carry an original yellow fever vaccination certificate on any West African trip: several countries on the coast road demand it of every arrival, and the rest demand it after you have passed through a neighbour.
- West Africa ↗Cross land borders and drive between cities in daylight only; plan each crossing as a full travel day with cash for fees and passport copies for checkpoints.
- Mali ↗Check your own government travel advice for Mali before any booking; advice depends on your passport and changes without notice.
- Mali ↗Entry is controlled by the transitional authorities; road routes are unsafe and no independent tourist route is documented here.
- Mali ↗Confirm that your travel insurance and medical evacuation cover apply to Mali before you rely on it.

Getting around
Walking is the only practical way inside town. When the river is high, a pinasse (motorised canoe) can take you to nearby Fula villages. For longer distances, hire a taxi or bush taxi from the junction.

Safety
- Security: central Mali is under a state of emergency. Check your government's travel advice before planning any trip.
- The Great Mosque is closed to non-Muslims except for brief guided visits arranged through the imam. Do not enter without permission.
- Monday market is the busiest day; transport fills up early. Book your seat the day before.
- No ATMs in Djenné. Bring enough CFA francs from Mopti or Sévaré.
- Photography of the mosque and people: always ask first. Some locals expect a small fee.
