  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Federal Way is a Seattle suburb of about 89,000 people between Sea-Tac Airport and Tacoma, on the I-5 corridor. The two real draws sit side by side: the Pacific Bonsai Museum and the Rhododendron Species Botanical Gardens. Everything else is malls, chain hotels and parking lots, so most travellers use it as a cheap airport-adjacent bed or a short stop, not a destination.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights and malls are spread along I-5 and Pacific Highway (SR-99) with big parking lots between them. Without a car, the Link light rail 1 Line ends at Federal Way Downtown Station, and King County Metro and Pierce Transit buses run from the transit centre to Sea-Tac, Seattle, Tacoma and Puyallup. Local fares are $3 for two hours ($1 seniors 65+, free for youth 0–18).

go

Door to door: About 40–60 min

Sound Transit 574 or Pierce Transit 500 south on Pacific Highway

Cheaper and easier than driving if you stay near the transit centre.

Dash Point State Park

go

Drive via SW Dash Point Rd

Puget Sound beach and forest trails; open 8AM–dusk.

Mount Rainier

overnight

Door to door: 1.5–2 h

Drive via Enchanted Pkwy S and SR-161 through Puyallup and Graham

A long day from here; sleep near the park instead.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

I-5 and S 320th St

Closest to The Commons mall and the transit centre; chain hotels (La Quinta, Courtyard, Hampton Inn, Staybridge).

I-5 and S 348th St

South end near Pacific Highway; cheaper motels (Days Inn, Quality Inn), a short drive to the gardens.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime suburb; the real risks are traffic on Pacific Highway, unlit streets after dark and leaving bags visible in a parked car.
  • Distances are car distances: the gardens, the mall and the hotels are not walkable to each other.
  • Wild Waves is seasonal and closes outside summer: check dates before you plan around it.
  • Pacific Highway (SR-99) is a strip of malls and motels with heavy traffic; cross only at signals.
  • Suburban streets are quiet but poorly lit at night; drive or take a rideshare after dark.

  3. Place pages with verified hours (Pacific Bonsai Museum, Rhododendron Garden, Dash Point) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Wild Waves seasonal fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
