Adapazarı is the centre of Sakarya province, 160 km east of Istanbul on the old military road to Ankara. It is an industrial city rebuilt after the 1999 earthquake, so there is little old fabric left. What earns a stop is the Sangarius (Justinianus) Bridge of about 553 AD, the waterwheel park, and the köfte and ıslama köfte strip by the station. Most travellers pass through on the YHT or the regional train from Gebze; one night is enough if you want the bridge and the spa at Kuzuluk.

Getting around

The city sprawls, so plan on taxis or dolmuş for anything beyond the centre. Adaray commuter trains link Adapazarı station with Arifiye and four intermediate stops; the regional train from Gebze also calls at Sapanca and Mithatpaşa. Long-distance buses use the Sakarya terminal, 4–5 km from the centre, with a taxi or dolmuş onward.

Watch out

Safety

A calm, ordinary Turkish city by day. The real risks are the earthquake fault under it, unlit pavements after dark, and long-distance buses that drop you at the out-of-town terminal: sort your onward taxi before you board.
  • This is an active earthquake zone on the North Anatolian fault; know your hotel's exit and do not linger under heavy facades.
  • The Sangarius Bridge is under repeated repair and you cannot walk across it; view from the bank.
  • Some sights (Orhan Mosque, Sakarya Art Gallery) have been closed for years: check before you walk there.
  • Long-distance buses stop at the out-of-town terminal, not the centre; budget a taxi at night.
