  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • Southern Africa ↗A rental car may leave its home country only with the rental company's cross-border letter, the registration papers and paid road taxes at each post; driving into Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique or Angola without them ends at the border.
  • Southern Africa ↗Across the subregion, plan every road leg to arrive before sunset: livestock, wildlife, pedestrians and unlit trucks make night driving the main cause of serious visitor accidents.
  • South Africa ↗Check visa and entry rules for your passport with the Department of Home Affairs or a South African mission before booking; exemptions depend on nationality, and the new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is optional for most visa-exempt visitors in 2026.
  • South Africa ↗Travelling with children: accompanied foreign children no longer need a birth certificate, but unaccompanied minors, South African children and some passports that omit parents' names still do; check with Home Affairs and your airline before you fly.
  • South Africa ↗Driving is on the left. If your licence is not in English or has no photo, get an International Driving Permit before you travel; rental companies also check it.
  • South Africa ↗National park gates open and close at fixed times; you must be inside your camp before the gate closes, and speed limits in parks are enforced.

Camps Bay is a beachfront strip of restaurants, bars and guesthouses on the Atlantic side of Cape Town, under the Twelve Apostles. It is walkable end to end, has no train or metro, and is best used as a 2-night base for beach time plus a Cape Peninsula day, or as an easy evening out from the city.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Walk the beachfront: Victoria Road runs parallel to the sand and most restaurants sit opposite it. There is no metro or train; use Uber, metered taxis or the hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus for the city and peninsula. A car helps for Chapman's Peak and the Cape Peninsula, but you do not need one inside Camps Bay.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 20–30 min

Uber or taxi over the Kloof Nek pass, or the sightseeing bus

Best for a half-day: Table Mountain cableway, Bo-Kaap, waterfront.

Cape Peninsula (Chapman's Peak, Boulders, Cape Point)

go

Door to door: Full day, 8–10 h

Self-drive or a guided day tour; Chapman's Peak Drive is a toll road

Start early; the drive is the point, not just the stops.

Hout Bay

go

Door to door: About 20 min

Car or taxi along the coast road

Harbour, market and a boat to Seal Island.

Llandudno

go

Door to door: About 15 min

Car or taxi over the pass

Small cove beach with no shops: bring what you need.

Noordhoek

go

Door to door: About 30–40 min

Car via Chapman's Peak Drive

Long beach and farm stalls; combine with the peninsula drive.

Kommetjie

caution

Door to door: About 40 min

Car along the coast

Better as a stop on a peninsula loop than a return trip.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Victoria Road beachfront

Steps from the beach, restaurants and bars; the loudest and priciest strip.

Camps Bay Drive and the slopes above

Guesthouses and villas with sea views; the walk back up can take 20–60 min.

Bakoven and the Llandudno side

Quieter, still walkable to the main beach, good for self-catering.

Watch out

Safety

Camps Bay is one of the safer-feeling Cape Town suburbs by day, but beachfront bag-snatching and car break-ins happen: keep valuables on you, not on the sand, and use Uber or a metered taxi after dark.
  • The Atlantic is cold (roughly 12–16°C) and the beach has no lifeguard cover at times: check flags before swimming.
  • Do not leave bags, phones or cameras unattended on the sand or in a parked car.
  • Walking back up from the beach to the upper slopes can take up to an hour: budget for a taxi at night.
  • Summer south-easterly winds can shut the beach for a day: keep a backup plan.
