Lac-Mégantic is a small lakefront town of about 6,000 people in the Eastern Townships, near the Maine border, 100 km east of Sherbrooke. It is a base for Mont-Mégantic National Park, the ASTROlab observatory and a dark-sky reserve, plus lake beaches and granite-country drives. One night covers the town; two nights let you add the park and a swim. A car is close to essential.

Getting around

A car is the practical way to cover the region: the tourist area spans roughly 50 km around the lake, with two provincial parks. Rue Frontenac (Route 161) is the main street; boulevard Jean-Marie Tardif or rue Papineau cross the Chaudière River. Cycle trails and rentals exist in the area and at Frontenac National Park. Taxi Mégantic serves the town.

Safety

A quiet, low-crime small town; the real risks are wildlife and unlit roads at night, cold-water swimming, and long drives on rural highways in winter. 911 works everywhere.
  • No passenger trains stop in Lac-Mégantic: plan on car or bus.
  • The bus to Québec City runs limited days: check the timetable before you book a room.
  • Mont-Mégantic National Park is about 50 km from town: budget an hour each way.
