Llandovery is a small market town on the western edge of the Brecon Beacons, on the Heart of Wales Line between Swansea and Shrewsbury. The town is walkable in an afternoon; the reason to sleep here is the surrounding country — Dolaucothi Gold Mines, Llyn Brianne and the Black Mountain — which is spread out and awkward without a car.

Getting around

The town is small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes. Everything outside it — Dolaucothi, Llyn Brianne, Carreg Cennen — needs a car or a taxi; rural bus services are thin and often weekday-only. The Heart of Wales Line gives a car-free arrival from Swansea (about 1 h 20 min) and Shrewsbury.

Safety

A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are rural driving on single-track lanes, weather that turns on the Black Mountain, and patchy phone signal in the valleys.
  • Rural buses run a handful of times a day and rarely on Sundays: check times before you rely on them.
  • Mobile signal is patchy in the Cothi and Tywi valleys; download maps and tickets before you set off.
  • Single-track lanes with passing places are normal; drive slowly and expect sheep on the road.
  • Many rural attractions and cafés close or cut hours from November to March: check ahead.
