La GrangeLa Grange, Texas

Give La Grange one night if you are driving between Austin and Houston: the quilt museum, the brewery ruins and Czech-Texan food fill a half-day.

La Grange is a small Texas town on the Colorado River, about 65 miles east of Austin, best known outside Texas as the title of a 1973 ZZ Top song. It has a compact historic downtown, a quilt museum, German-Czech heritage sites and a state historic site on the bluff above town. It works as a one-night stop on a Highway 71 drive, not as a destination on its own.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

You need a car. Downtown is walkable in 10–15 minutes end to end, but the state historic site, the Czech centre and the highway hotels are 2–5 km apart with no useful bus service. Parking on the square is free.

Watch out

Safety

La Grange is a low-crime small town; the real risks are summer heat, deer on rural roads at night and long drives after a heavy meal. Standard US advice applies: 911 for anything urgent.
  • Summer heat: 35 °C (95 °F)+ afternoons in July and August; carry water.
  • Rural roads at night have deer and few lights.
  • Many downtown shops and the quilt museum close Sunday and Monday; check before you drive out.
  • Cell coverage is fine in town but patchy on back roads.
