Callander is a small town on the Highland Boundary Fault, 45 min by bus from Stirling, where the lowlands meet the Trossachs. The town itself is a short visit; the reason to come is the national park west and north of it, which needs a car or bike. Most travellers use it as one night between Stirling and the Highlands, or as a day trip.

The town is walkable. There is no taxi firm based here, so hire from Dunblane or Stirling. A car or bike is needed for the Trossachs and Lake of Menteith; the cycle track north follows the old railway line.

Safety

A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are weather and terrain. Hill paths, ice and sudden cloud on Ben Ledi and the Trossachs are the things that catch people out. Tell someone your route and carry a map.
  • No taxi firm operates in town; arrange one from Dunblane or Stirling.
  • The railway closed in 1965: reach Callander by bus from Stirling, or by car.
  • Bracklinn Falls bridge has been damaged and repaired at times; check before relying on the circular walk.
