- South America ↗Above 2,500 m (Bogotá, Quito, Cusco, La Paz) keep the first day light; sleep lower where you can (Sacred Valley before Cusco) and descend if headache comes with vomiting or confusion.
- South America ↗A yellow fever certificate is required on arrival in French Guiana, and asked for on some routes into Bolivia, Paraguay, Suriname and Guyana, or when arriving from Amazon areas — vaccinate at least 10 days before travel and carry the card.
- South America ↗Overnight buses are the norm in Argentina, Chile and Peru, but pick top-tier companies and keep valuables on your body; on-board thefts from overhead racks are the common loss.
- Chile ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Chile's National Migration Service or a Chilean consulate; keep the entry slip or digital record you receive.
- Chile ↗Torres del Paine: campsites and refugios on the W and O treks must be booked in advance, and the park requires an entry ticket bought ahead; check the official park (CONAF) channels.
- Chile ↗Chile strictly controls food imports: declare fruit, meat, dairy, seeds and honey on arrival, or throw them away before customs.
Punta Arenas is the largest city in Chilean Patagonia and the regional capital of Magallanes, sitting on the Strait of Magellan about 1,400 km from Antarctica. It is a compact, walkable port city of grand 19th-century mansions, a famous cemetery, and a working harbour. Most travellers use it as a staging point for the Magdalena Island penguin colony, Torres del Paine, or an Antarctic expedition. Two nights covers the city and one wildlife trip; one night is enough if you are only transiting.

Arrive & move
Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in
Getting around
The centre is compact and walkable, but wind is constant and strong. Taxis and colectivos (route taxis) are cheap and easy to flag. A public bus system (Movigas) runs four lines from downtown to the suburbs, not useful within the centre. Rent a car or book a tour for sights outside the city such as the penguin colonies and Río Seco.

Day-trips
Isla Magdalena penguin colony
goDoor to door: About 5 h round trip
Boat from Terminal de Tres Puentes, northern end of the city

cautionDoor to door: About 1 h each way
Bus toward Río Seco from Chiloé and Ignacio Carrera Pinto, or taxi
13 km north; limited opening hours (check before going). Free, donations welcome.8.1 mi north; limited opening hours (check before going). Free, donations welcome.
Torres del Paine National Park
overnightDoor to door: About 3 h to Puerto Natales, then onward
Bus or car via Ruta 9 toward Puerto Natales
Too far for a day return; base in Puerto Natales for the park.
Porvenir, Tierra del Fuego
goDoor to door: About 2 h 20 min crossing
Ferry across the strait (Transbordadora Austral Broom)
Runs a few times a week; cars and foot passengers. Weather can cancel sailings.

Zona Franca / north end
Near the duty-free zone and the Tres Puentes ferry terminal; useful for early penguin departures.

Watch out
Safety
- Weather changes fast: rain, wind and sun can all appear in one day; bring a windproof layer year-round.
- Strong winds can cancel ferry crossings to Magdalena Island and Tierra del Fuego; keep a buffer day.
- Book penguin and Antarctic trips ahead in high season (Dec–Mar); they sell out.
- The city has no central bus station: buy tickets at each company's office.
- There is no road link north through Chile; you must cross into Argentina to reach the rest of the country by land.
