Whitecourt is a forestry and oil-and-gas town of about 9,600 people at the meeting of the McLeod and Athabasca rivers, on Highway 43 between Edmonton and Grande Prairie. It is a practical stop with real outdoors: 50 km of town trails, a limestone canyon with a waterfall, river slides in summer and groomed snowmobile trails in winter. Sights are spread between the valley, the hilltop and West Whitecourt, so a car helps.

Whitecourt Transit runs buses Monday–Friday 6:30–20:45 and Saturday 9:00–16:45, $3 cash fare, children 6 and under free (check). For the canyon, crater trail and Carson Pegasus Provincial Park you need a car: no transit goes there.

Safety

A small, low-crime town; the real risks are winter driving, cold exposure and wildlife on back roads. Tell someone your trail plan and carry water and layers.
  • Distances between the valley, hilltop and West Whitecourt are short by car but long on foot: plan drives, not walks.
  • Winter driving on Hwy 43: ice, blowing snow and moose or deer on the shoulder after dark.
  • Collecting meteorite fragments at the Whitecourt crater is prohibited and carries a heavy fine.
  • Cell coverage thins on back roads and trails; download offline maps before you leave town.
