Yoshkar-Ola is the capital of the Mari El republic, a Volga city of about 260,000 that rebuilt its centre in the 2000s with a red-brick Kremlin, a Bruges-named riverfront and a clock that plays a mechanical scene. It is a compact walking city, not a resort: one day covers the core, and most travellers reach it by overnight train from Moscow or by road from Kazan.

The centre is walkable end to end in about 30 minutes. Trolleybuses, buses and marshrutkas cover the rest; pay the conductor on trolleybuses and buses, the driver on marshrutkas. Taxis are cheap by Western standards; use a licensed company rather than an unmarked private car.
