Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
  • Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Gelsenkirchen is a Ruhr industrial city of about 158,000 people, best known for FC Schalke 04 and the Veltins-Arena, but it also holds real sights: the Zoom Erlebniswelt zoo, the Nordsternpark industrial landscape, the Rungenberg mining tip and the Kunstmuseum in Buer. They sit far apart, so a car or a day of trams covers one cluster, not all of them. One full day works without a match; a second night only pays off with an arena ticket.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Trams 301, 302 and 107 run from Gelsenkirchen Hbf; 302 goes north to the Veltins-Arena and Buer, 107 west towards Essen and the Zollverein mine. Buy and stamp a ticket before boarding; VRR, DeutschlandTicket and SchönerTagTicket NRW are valid. The city is spread out, so allow 30–40 min between sights.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Essen

go

Door to door: About 30 min

RE or S-Bahn from Gelsenkirchen Hbf, about 10–15 min

Zollverein mine and museum island; a better base than Gelsenkirchen for most trips.

Dortmund

go

Door to door: About 50 min (check)

RE3 from Gelsenkirchen Hbf via Herne, or S2 direct; about 30–40 min (check)

Bigger centre, more museums and a stronger food and bar scene.

Bochum

go

Door to door: About 40 min

RB46 from Gelsenkirchen Hbf, about 25 min

Tram 302 also links the two cities directly.

Hattingen

go

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Train to Bochum, then bus or train onward

Half-timbered old town; a half day.

Duisburg

go

Door to door: About 45 min

RE2 or RE42 from Gelsenkirchen Hbf, about 25–35 min

Inland port and Landschaftspark; combine with a Rhine walk.

Herne

caution

Door to door: About 30 min

RE3 or RB32 from Gelsenkirchen Hbf, about 15 min

Only if a specific event draws you; otherwise little for a visitor.

Witten

caution

Door to door: About 1 h

Train to Bochum or Dortmund, then onward

Useful as a start for the Ruhr valley walks, not as a town visit.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Gelsenkirchen Hbf area

Best for one night with bags: trams 301, 302 and 107 leave from here, and the RE/RB/S lines reach Essen and Dortmund fast.

Buer (north)

The livelier of the two centres, with Hochstraße shops and the Kunstmuseum; tram 302 from Hbf, about 20 min.

Near Veltins-Arena

Only worth it on a match or concert night; otherwise you are far from everything and the tram is packed after events.

Watch out

Safety

Gelsenkirchen is a normal Ruhr city and safe by day; the centre and Hbf area are quiet and thinly lit at night, so stick to lit main streets and keep to tram routes after dark.
  • No valid ticket means a €60 (≈ US$70) penalty, and plainclothes inspectors do patrol.
  • The tram stop at the arena is not wheelchair-accessible; use Willy-Brandt-Allee, about 10 min on foot.
  • Do not drive to the arena on match or concert days; trams are packed but cars are worse.
  • E-scooter rental is banned in the city; private scooters cannot be taken on trams and buses.

What this guide covers so far, and its sources

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Gelsenkirchen. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Hbf and Bahnhofstraße, Buer and Kunstmuseum, Nordsternpark, the arena and Schalke Museum.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Schalke Museum, Kunstmuseum, Zoom, Nordsternpark) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Match-day and hostile-arrival fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
