Santiago is a small colonial town 40 km south of Monterrey and a Pueblo Mágico, used as the gateway to Cumbres de Monterrey National Park and the Cola de Caballo falls. The town itself is a hilltop plaza, a church and a handful of restaurants; the shopping strip at Los Cavazos and the outdoor sights along MEX 85 are what fill the day. Most visitors come from Monterrey for a weekend, so one night is enough unless you are hiking or canyoning.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the town is walkable, but the falls, the bat cave and the park entrances sit along highways with no useful bus. From Monterrey, drive MEX 85 south about 30 km to the town turn, or take a taxi (about M$200 one way) and hire the driver for the day. Uber drivers in Monterrey often accept a day hire. Campgrounds and cabins line N.L. Hwy 20 into the park.

Watch out

Safety

Santiago is a small, quiet Pueblo Mágico and the usual cautions apply: use toll highways (cuota) after dark, keep to the town and park areas, and treat the unlit mountain roads and cave sites with care. 911 for everything; 078 for tourist help.
  • The Presa de la Boca lake has dried up in drought years (2022): confirm the water is there before booking a lakefront resort.
  • Cueva de los Murciélagos bats leave at dusk in warm months only; the site is free and unlit — bring a torch and do not enter the cave.
  • Canyoning and caving in the park run with guides only; check the operator's insurance and that the trip leaves from your hotel.
  • Weekend restaurant tables in town fill up: reserve, or eat early.
  • Mountain roads are unlit and foggy at night; drive the park highways in daylight.
