Powell River sits on the upper Sunshine Coast, a mill town of about 13,000 people that turned into an outdoor base. It is on the mainland but has no direct road link to the rest of BC, so you arrive by two ferries or a short flight. Most travellers give it one or two nights between the Sunshine Coast and Lund.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the city stretches along Highway 101 and buses are limited. BC Transit runs several routes daily, including route 3 to the Westview ferry terminal, plus less frequent routes to Saltery Bay and Lund. Taxis exist but are not cheap; ride-hailing is limited.

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are cold water, fast tides, logging roads with no phone signal and winter storms that cancel ferries. Tell someone your trail plan and carry rain gear.
  • Two ferries are needed from Vancouver (Horseshoe Bay–Langdale, then Earl's Cove–Saltery Bay); book summer sailings ahead.
  • The Earl's Cove–Saltery Bay crossing is free northbound and paid southbound.
  • Cell and data coverage thins out on the backroads and on the canoe route; download maps first.
  • Rain is heavy from October to March; trails get muddy and some services cut hours.
