Hayfield is a stone village of about 2,600 people on the River Sett, inside the Peak District National Park and at the foot of Kinder Scout, Derbyshire's highest ground at 636 m. It is a walking base, not a sightseeing town: the 1932 Mass Trespass started here, and most visitors come for the plateau, the Sett Valley Trail or a pub lunch. One night covers the village; two nights let you walk Kinder properly and add a second short route.

Getting around

The village is walkable end to end in about 10 minutes. For Kinder, walk or drive about 1 mile east along Kinder Road to Bowden Bridge car park (about 20 spaces, pay-and-display; charge rises with inflation, so check the board). Buses 61 and 358 link Hayfield with Glossop, New Mills, Whaley Bridge and Buxton; the 61 has no evening service and the 64 runs twice daily and not on Sundays.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime village; the real risk is the moor. Weather turns fast on Kinder Scout, paths are boggy and navigation errors are common — go equipped, tell someone your route, and turn back in cloud or high wind.
  • Kinder Scout is rough moorland: take a paper map, waterproofs and a charged phone; mobile signal is patchy on the plateau.
  • Kinder Downfall is a 30 m waterfall that is often a trickle; it is impressive only after heavy rain.
  • Bowden Bridge car park has about 20 spaces and fills early on weekends; there is no parking beyond it.
  • Bus 61 has no evening service and the 64 runs only twice daily and not on Sundays.
  • Village centre parking is limited; use the Station Road pay-and-display car park.
