Rockingham is a Perth metro beach city about 50 km south of the CBD, 20 km north of Mandurah, and reachable by train in roughly 35 minutes. Its draw is the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park: Penguin Island, a seal colony, snorkelling and the limestone headland at Point Peron. The suburbs are spread over 257 km², so a car or a planned bus route matters more here than in most beach towns.

Getting around

The Mandurah line runs from Perth to Rockingham (about 35 min) and Warnbro (about 38 min), every 10–15 min on weekdays and about every 15 min on weekends, less often after dark. Local buses all feed those two stations, so cross-town trips need a transfer, usually on Kitson Street outside Bradbury Villas. Most routes run hourly; the 555 is the frequent one. A car is the simplest way to reach Point Peron, the southern beaches and Baldivis. Parking is free except at the train stations (about A$2 a day), and fills early at Rockingham Centre and the foreshore.

Safety

A safe, low-crime beach city; the real risks are summer heat and storms with damaging winds, venomous snakes in bushland, and swimming or boating outside patrolled areas.
  • Summer temperatures can reach 37 °C or more, and storms with damaging winds can arrive with little warning — stay indoors if thunder starts.
  • Parking fines run about A$120 (≈ US$80), and private car parks tow non-customers; check signage before leaving the car.
  • Snakes in bushland around Lake Cooloongup and Lake Richmond are mostly venomous; stay on tracks and wear covered shoes.
  • Buses are packed with school students roughly 14:30–16:00 on school days.
  • Do not take a boat near the grain terminal dock — it is an active shipping area with an exclusion zone.
  • Garden Island is an active naval base: parts are off limits even by boat.
