Skip unless you need a cheap bed en route to Yosemite or want the rodeo in April: half a day is enough for the Cowboy Museum and a walk along the Stanislaus River.
Oakdale is a small San Joaquin Valley town that calls itself the Cowboy Capital of the World. It sits on CA-120, the fastest route from the Bay Area to Yosemite, so most travellers pass through without stopping. The main draw is the Oakdale Rodeo (April) and the Cowboy Museum; otherwise it is a quick lunch stop or an overnight before the national park.
