Vacoas-Phoenix

Half a day for Tamarind Falls; not a base unless you have family in the area.

Vacoas-Phoenix is a residential and commercial hub in the central plateau, about 15 km south of Port Louis. Most travellers pass through for the Tamarind Falls hike. It is not a tourist base: one morning or afternoon is enough.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • African islands ↗Sleep on the island you fly home from the night before your long-haul departure; inter-island flights and ferries in this region are cancelled or rescheduled often enough to break a same-day connection.
  • African islands ↗In the Indian Ocean islands book flexible rates for December to March: a cyclone warning can shut airports, ferries and roads for two or three days.
  • Mauritius ↗Check visa and entry rules for your passport on the official Mauritius government sites; many nationalities get a visitor stay on arrival, but confirm before you fly.
  • Mauritius ↗Check with a travel clinic whether a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if you are arriving from or through a country with yellow fever risk.
  • Mauritius ↗Drones need permission from the authorities; do not fly one without it.

Safety

Vacoas-Phoenix is generally safe. Watch for pickpocketing in crowded markets and on buses. The Tamarind Falls trail can be dangerous without a guide.
  • Tamarind Falls requires a guide for first-timers; the path is steep and slippery after rain.
  • Traffic on the M2 can be heavy during peak hours (7:30–9:30 and 16:00–18:00) (check).
  • Markets close by 17:00; arrive before 15:00 for the best selection (check).
