Östhammar
Go for one summer night, not a base: bus 811 from Uppsala takes 1 h 10 min, and Öregrund plus the free Gräsö ferry are the reason to come.
Östhammar is a small Roslagen coast town of about 4,500 people, 1 h 10 min by bus from Uppsala and with no rail link. It runs on summer: the neighbouring port of Öregrund, the free car ferry to Gräsö island, beaches and boat races fill June to August, while winter leaves a quiet town and little open. Come for one night, two if you want a full day on Gräsö.

Getting around
UL regional bus 811 links Östhammar and Öregrund in about 20 min. The Gräsöfärjan car ferry runs from Öregrund to Gräsö, free, at least twice an hour most of the day. Route 76 is the main road; a car or bike helps for Dannemora, Gimo and the ironworks villages.

Safety
- No train station: the whole trip is bus or car.
- Many restaurants, cafés and campsites open only in summer — check before you book outside Jun–Aug.
- Route 76 is narrow and busy in summer; the marked Kustlinjen cycle route is the safer option by bike.
- Alcohol: the only Systembolaget shop in the area is in Öregrund, and it closes early on Saturdays.
