Blakeney is a small quay village of about 635 people on the north Norfolk coast, inside the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. People come for Blakeney Point, the shingle spit that holds England's largest grey seal colony, and for the birdlife on the marshes. The village itself is a short walk: quay, one street, a few pubs and a hotel. Two nights is enough; the coast path and the RSPB reserve at Cley are the reason to stay longer.

Getting around

The village is small enough to walk end to end in 15 minutes. Sanders Coaches service 46 links Holt and Wells-next-the-Sea through the village; check the current timetable before you rely on it. Regional Cycle Route 30 passes half a mile south. A car makes Cley, Morston and the beaches easy; parking at the quay is limited and fills early in summer.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet village with low crime. The real risks are the sea and the tides: soft mud and fast water in the harbour, no lifeguards, and shingle walking that takes longer than it looks. Keep away from seals and take a torch for winter evenings.
  • Do not walk onto Blakeney Point to approach seals: keep 10 m or more, and never between a mother and a pup. Landing on the Point is restricted in the pupping season (Nov–early Jan).
  • The Point is a 3–4 mile round walk over shingle from Cley; there is no shade, no water and no shelter.
  • Tide and weather decide ferry sailings, not the clock: book a slot and expect it to move.
  • Mobile signal is patchy: 4G from EE and O2, weak from Vodafone, and no 5G in the area.
  • The A149 floods at Morston and Cley in winter storms; check before driving.
