Taganga is a fishing village 5 km north of Santa Marta, on the Caribbean coast at the foot of dry mountains. It is small: a curved bay, one beach road, dive schools and cheap beds. Two nights covers a dive day and the walk to Playa Grande; add a third night if you want a Tayrona boat day, which takes a full day (boat out about 9:30, back about 16:00). It is a base for diving and beaches, not a town to tour.

Watch out

Safety

Taganga is small and mostly calm, but it is not a place to walk dark paths or flash valuables: the Playa Grande trail and the beach at night are the two spots to treat with care.
  • Dive schools vary: confirm the instructor's certification and that your certificate is issued before you pay in full.
  • The Playa Grande path is unlit and isolated: go in daylight, don't carry valuables, don't walk it after sunset.
  • There is one ATM in town (Bancolombia) and it is often out of cash: bring pesos from Santa Marta.
  • Beach at night: reports of drug activity on the sand in front of some hostels; keep to lit streets.
  • Boat crossings to Tayrona can be rough and wet: plastic bag for your bag, expect spray.
