Bellingham sits on Bellingham Bay between Seattle (about 130 km south) and Vancouver, BC (about 90 km north), and is the last sizeable US city before the Canadian border. Fairhaven, downtown and the Western Washington University campus are three separate walkable pockets, so a car or the WTA bus matters more here than in most US cities of this size. Most visitors come for two nights as a stop on the I-5 corridor, or as a base for Mount Baker, the North Cascades and the San Juan Islands ferries.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: I-5 has seven Bellingham exits and parking downtown is about $0.75 an hour. Without a car, Whatcom Transportation Authority (WTA) buses link Fairhaven, downtown and the airport, and a day pass is $3; routes 1, 3 and 26–80X also reach Ferndale, Lynden, Blaine, Sumas and Mount Vernon. Downtown, Fairhaven and the WWU campus are each walkable on their own, but the gaps between them are not.

Near WWU / Sehome

Campus and Sehome Hill Arboretum trails; cheaper student-oriented lodging, bus route 1 and 3 nearby.

Safety

Bellingham is a low-risk city by US standards; the real hazards are wet roads, dark early winter evenings and trail weather on Mount Baker. Keep valuables out of sight in parked cars at trailheads.
  • Winters are long, wet and windy from October to May: pack a waterproof shell, not an umbrella.
  • Chuckanut Drive (SR 11) is narrow with tight shoulders and popular with cyclists; drive it in daylight.
  • Mount Baker and North Cascades roads close with snow, typically November to May: check conditions before setting out.
  • The US–Canada border at Blaine can back up for an hour or more in summer; carry your passport or card.
  • Downtown parking is metered and resident-permit streets are enforced; read the sign before you leave the car.
