Truro is Britain's southernmost city and Cornwall's administrative capital, but it is the size of a small town: a compact cathedral core, two covered markets and a good food street, all walkable in half a day. Its real value is as a base. The Falmouth branch line, the bus station at Lemon Quay and the A39/A390 put beaches, gardens and fishing villages within an hour. Two nights is the useful minimum; one night only works if you are passing on the Cornish Main Line.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: cathedral, museum, markets and Hall for Cornwall are all within 10 minutes on foot. Buses leave from Lemon Quay, not from the train station, which is a 0.8 km uphill walk away. The park and ride runs from Langarth/Threemilestone (A390) and Tregurra (A39); parking is free and the shuttle is £2. Branch trains to Falmouth run about every 30 minutes.

Safety

Truro is a low-risk small city; the real issues are the steep station hill with luggage, dark lanes after pub closing, and tide and cliff care on nearby coast walks.
  • The train station sits at the bottom of a steep hill, 0.8 km from the centre: with luggage, plan a bus or taxi.
  • There is no lift on the station footbridge between platforms.
  • Eastbound departures use the level crossing and car-park ramp, not the main station building.
  • Park-and-ride shuttles stop in the evening; check the last bus before you park.
  • Summer and school holidays fill Falmouth branch trains and coast car parks.
