Sekondi and Takoradi are twin port cities merged into one municipality in 1946 and now Ghana's fourth-largest city, built on timber, shipping, rail and, since the western oil finds, a steady flow of oil and gas workers. Sights are thin and spread out: a Dutch fort in poor repair, a war cemetery, a big market. Most travellers use it as a transport hinge on the Accra–Cape Coast–Busua road rather than a destination, and the beach towns 40–90 minutes west are the reason to stop at all.

Getting around

Tro-tros run set routes and are the cheap default; shared and chartered taxis cover the rest — agree the fare before you get in. Commuter trains link Sekondi and Takoradi stations several times a day. Distances between the two towns are short but traffic around Market Circle is slow.

Watch out

Safety

The main risks are road traffic, heavy rain and unlit streets after dark. Hotels in the Beach Road and DTD zone use security guards; keep valuables out of sight in the market and travel between towns in daylight.
  • Roads between Accra and Takoradi carry heavy trucks: travel in daylight only.
  • Fort Orange is dilapidated and not a managed site: do not expect railings, tickets or opening hours.
  • May–July brings the year's heaviest rain; June averages around 346 mm.
  • Carry small cedi notes for tro-tros and market stalls; change is scarce.
  • Ask your hotel to arrange taxis after dark rather than hailing on the street.
