Sevastopol is a Black Sea naval port on the southwestern tip of Crimea, built around bays rather than a grid, so the centre is two parallel streets with a hill between them. Its draw is layered history: Greek Chersonesus, the 1850s Crimean War siege and the World War II defence. Most visitors come from CIS countries; Western travellers should read their own government advice before booking, because entry, payments and insurance all work differently here.

Getting around
The centre is walkable but hilly, with steps between Lenina and Bolshaya Morskaya. Marshrutkas and city buses cover the rest and are cheap but crowded, with little English signage; ask your driver or a fellow passenger for the stop. Ferries cross the bay to the north side. A car is the practical way to reach Chersonesus, Sapun Gora and Balaklava in one day.
