Capri is a 5 km island in the Bay of Naples, two towns (Capri Town and Anacapri) and one harbour (Marina Grande). Day trippers arrive from 09:00 and leave by 17:00; the island is at its best before and after them. One night is enough for the Blue Grotto, Monte Solaro and a coastal walk. Two nights if you want to swim and hike without rushing.

Getting around

Funicular Marina Grande–Capri Town, about €2 a ride (2026 estimate). Island buses about €2 a ride (2026 estimate); the Capri Town–Anacapri bus fills up, so take the direct Marina Grande–Anacapri bus when you can. Open-top taxis are expensive: agree the price before you get in. On foot, signposted stairs and lanes cross the island; the Phoenician Steps between Capri Town and Anacapri are steep.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for tourists; the real risks are the sea (grotto swimming, boat transfers in swell), steep stairs and heat on the coastal paths, and unposted bills at harbour cafés. Keep an eye on bags on packed summer boats.
  • The Blue Grotto closes with tide and swell; check the sea state before you pay for the boat.
  • Rowboat oarsmen expect a tip on top of the entry ticket; agree the total first.
  • Restaurants and cafés on the Piazzetta and at the harbour charge the highest prices on the island; a can of drink at the port can cost several times the shop price.
  • July and August: beaches, buses and the grotto queue are at their worst; book beds and boats weeks ahead.
  • Many hotels, restaurants and the Anacapri tourist office shut from November to Easter; check before a winter trip.
