PeterhofПетергоф

Day-trip from Saint Petersburg: 1 day for the Lower Park and Grand Palace. Sleep here only if you want the fountains at opening.

Peterhof is a palace-and-fountain suburb on the Gulf of Finland, about 45 minutes from central Saint Petersburg by train or hydrofoil. The Lower Park holds the Grand Cascade and the Samson fountain; the Upper Park is free. Almost everything shuts on the last Tuesday of the month, and the fountains run May to mid-October only. One full day covers the core; a second day is for Alexandria Park and the Raketa watch factory.

  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Reach this subregion only from the EU side — Romania for Moldova — through crossings run by recognised authorities; no route through Ukraine, Belarus or Russia is planned here.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Re-read your government's advice for Moldova (it covers Transnistria) in the week you travel; the situation next door changes fast.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Carry euros in cash for Transnistria and village Moldova; cards stop working at the Dniester.
  • Russia ↗Check your own government travel advice for Russia before any booking; advice depends on your passport and changes without notice.
  • Russia ↗Direct flights from much of Europe and North America are suspended; no independent tourist route is documented here.
  • Russia ↗Confirm that your travel insurance and medical evacuation cover apply to Russia before you rely on it.

Getting around

Walking covers the ensemble. From Novy Peterhof station, buses 350/351/352/356 run to the parks (about the fifth stop) or it is a 40-minute walk. Taxis via app are cheaper than hailing on the street.

The base for most trips; trains run frequently through the day.

Better done as its own day from the city, not from Peterhof.

No direct link from Peterhof; a long same-day return, better as its own day from the city.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Novy Peterhof (around the rail station)

Closest to the Upper Park entrance and the bus/minibus stands; a handful of small hotels.

Old Peterhof (west)

Quieter, near the English Park and Sergievka; walk or short bus ride to the ensemble.

Saint Petersburg centre

Most visitors sleep here and day-trip; far more beds and food choice.

Watch out

Safety

Peterhof itself is a low-crime suburban town; the practical risks are pickpockets in the crowded Lower Park, icy paths in winter, and payment problems with foreign cards. Check your government's travel advice for Russia before booking.
  • Almost everything closes on the last Tuesday of each month.
  • Fountains run May to mid-October, daily 11:00–17:00; outside that the cascade is dry.
  • Non-Russian visitors pay a higher Lower Park admission than Russian citizens.
  • Train stations and platforms have no English announcements: know the Cyrillic spelling of your stop.
  • Carry your passport; it is checked for the non-resident ticket rate.
  • Card payments from foreign-issued cards often fail in Russia: carry rubles.
