Middletown is a large suburban township in Monmouth County, about an hour from New York by NJ Transit's North Jersey Coast Line. There is no compact downtown to walk: sights, shops and restaurants sit along Route 35 and Route 36, so a car changes the trip completely. Most travellers use it for a bed near Sandy Hook, the bayshore and the ferry towns, then drive to Red Bank or Asbury Park for the evening. Treat it as two nights maximum, and only with a car.

A car is close to essential: the township is spread along Route 35 and Route 36 with no walkable core. NJ Transit's North Jersey Coast Line stops at Middletown station on Church Street for New York Penn and Bay Head. Local NJ Transit buses 817, 833 and 834 cover parts of the township. SeaStreak fast ferries run from Manhattan to Atlantic Highlands, Highlands and Belford, then you need a shuttle, cab or short drive.
