Mount Rinjani is a 3,726 m active volcano and national park on Lombok, the second highest volcano in Indonesia after Mount Kerinci on Sumatra. A 50 km² caldera holds the crater lake Segara Anak and the Aik Kalak hot springs, with the young cone Gunung Barujari still growing inside it. Treks run from two trailheads: Senaru (600 m) on the north side, closest to Senggigi and the west coast, and Sembalun Lawang (1,150 m) on the east, the shorter approach to the summit. Most trekkers stop at the crater rim at about 2,700 m; the final 1,000 m to the top is loose scree and near-freezing. The park authority sets one fixed charge, the Rp150,000 entrance fee; everything else is a negotiated guided package. The area is a UNESCO Global Geopark (Rinjani–Lombok, 2018).

Accessibility
- Rinjani is a strenuous multi-day mountain trek; there is no wheelchair access on the trails.
- The trailheads at Senaru and Sembalun are reached by road, but the routes themselves are steep and rough.
Visiting lightly
- Book with operators that provide toilet tents and trowels, and that carry waste down.
- Ask whether porters are paid fairly and carry reasonable loads; one porter per two trekkers is typical.
- Avoid pre-booking agents that mimic established providers; arrange directly in Senaru or Sembalun where possible.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Mount Rinjani?
The park entrance fee is Rp150,000 per person (2026 estimate), set by the park authority. Guided treks cost far more: about Rp1.5–2m per person for 2 days/1 night to the crater rim and Rp1.8–3.7m for 3 days/2 nights, usually including transport, food, gear and porters. Rates and inclusions vary by operator — check.
What are the best hikes in Mount Rinjani?
The 2-day crater rim trek is the most popular, camping at about 2,700 m above Segara Anak. The 3-day summit trek adds the final 1,000 m of scree to 3,726 m. A 4-day route descends to the lake and the Aik Kalak hot springs before climbing back out.
When is the best time to visit Mount Rinjani?
The dry season runs roughly April to November, when treks are most reliable. December to February is the wet season, when treks are often cancelled at short notice. Month-by-month conditions vary — check forecasts and park advice before booking.
Do I need a guide to climb Rinjani?
Yes. Park regulations require a certified guide. The route is remote, phone signal is patchy and accidents have happened. Book a guided package from Senaru or Sembalun Lawang.
How cold does it get on Rinjani?
Above 2,000 m it feels alpine, and summit temperatures can drop to about 4°C with significant wind chill. Bring a thermal base layer, a waterproof and windproof jacket, gloves, a hat and a head lamp.
How do I avoid crowds on Rinjani?
Trek outside the July–August peak, start the summit push before dawn, and ask your operator how many groups camp at the rim the same night. Crowd levels vary by week — check locally.
