Belgrave is the end of the Belgrave metro line, 35 km east of Melbourne, and the departure point for the Puffing Billy steam railway. The village is small: a main street of shops and cafés, forest walks at the edge of town, and the Dandenong Ranges beyond. One night covers the steam train and a forest walk; two nights let you add the 1000 Steps and a hills village.

Getting around

The Belgrave line train runs from Melbourne to Belgrave station in about 1 h; you need a Myki card, topped up before you travel. Buses leave from the station forecourt to Belgrave South (697), Lilydale (663), Gembrook (695), Upwey (699), Olinda (694) and Oakleigh (693), but most run infrequently and some not on Sundays. A car helps for the forest roads and hill villages; roads are narrow, steep and winding.
