St. Marys is a small northwest-Ohio town of about 8,300 people built around Grand Lake St. Marys, the state's largest man-made lake at 13,500 acres, and the Miami and Erie Canal that runs through downtown. It is a lake-and-canal stop, not a city break: a half day on the water, a half day on the towpath, one or two nights. Most travellers reach it by car on US-33 between Columbus and Fort Wayne, or as a side stop from Wapakoneta and Celina.

A car is the practical choice: the lake, the campground and the US-33 commercial strip sit outside the walkable downtown core, and sidewalks do not connect them (distances check). Downtown itself is walkable, and the canal towpath and lake paths are for bikes and on foot. There is no local bus aimed at visitors (check).

- Do not drink untreated lake water at any time.
- The lake path is shared with vehicles in places, and the canal path crosses roads; the tunnel under US-33 is tight enough that you may need to walk your bike.
- Small-town hours: many restaurants and shops close early or on Mondays; check before you drive out.
