  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Bracebridge is a small Muskoka town on the Muskoka River, about 190 km north of Toronto on Highway 11, with a walkable downtown, a waterfall at its centre and a summer population that swells with cottagers and day visitors. It works as a one-night stop on a Muskoka loop or a base for lake and trail days.

Watch out

Safety

Bracebridge is a low-crime small town; the real risks are winter driving on Highway 11, cold water on the lakes, and summer long-weekend traffic. 911 for anything urgent.
  • Summer Friday northbound and Sunday southbound on Highway 400/11 can add hours; long weekends are the worst.
  • Winter storms close or slow Highway 11 several times a year; winter tyres and a flexible plan matter.
  • No passenger train service through Muskoka since 2012; do not plan around rail.
  • Book summer weekends ahead — cottage-country beds sell out in July and August.
