• Never cross the barriers at the terminal face. Two visitors were killed by falling ice there in 2009; the ice and rock fall without warning.
• Access roads close. The Fox Glacier access road (north of Fox River) has been shut by landslide, and Glacier View Road (south of Fox River) has been closed to vehicles — walkable only. Check the DOC page before you set out.
• Heli-hikes and scenic flights cancel in cloud and rain, often at short notice. Build a spare half-day into the plan or book the first morning slot.
• Sandflies at Gillespies Beach and along the river are severe. Bring repellent.
• Fuel up here or in Franz Josef; the next reliable station south is Haast, about 1.5 h away.
• Winter rooms in the cheaper lodges can be cold — ask about heating before booking.
