Viseu
Give Viseu one full day and one night: cathedral square, old town on foot, Dão wine. Two nights only if you add Serra da Estrela or the Dão quintas.
Viseu is a hilltop district capital in the Beira Alta, halfway between Aveiro and Guarda and in the middle of the Dão wine region. It has no railway station, so you arrive by coach or car. The historic centre is compact and walkable in half a day; the rest of a stay is wine, food and the Serra da Estrela and Dão villages around it.

Getting around
The old town is walkable: Adro da Sé, Praça da República and Rua Direita are within 10 minutes of each other. A funicular links the lower city (Forum) with the upper city (Adro da Sé). For Fontelo Park, the ring-road malls or outlying hotels, use a car, taxi or local bus. Viseu has no train station; the nearest are Nelas and Mangualde on the Linha da Beira Alta.
