Tomar is a small Ribatejo city built around the Convent of Christ, the Templar headquarters that became the Order of Christ and backed Portugal's 15th-century sea expansion. The walled convent sits above a grid of old streets, a river park and a 17th-century aqueduct. Trains from Lisbon run hourly in about 2 h, so it works as one night or a long day out.

Getting around

The centre is small and walkable; the climb to the Convent of Christ is the only real effort. Two city bus lines run at about €1 a ticket, valid 1 h. Regional trains reach Entroncamento, Lisbon and Coimbra; buses cover Fátima and nearby towns.

Watch out

Safety

Tomar is a calm small city; the real risks are the steep, uneven climb to the convent, summer heat and pickpockets only in the crowded festival years. Standard precautions are enough.
  • The convent is uphill: wear shoes with grip, not sandals, and carry water in summer.
  • Sunday and holiday mornings at the convent are free until 14:00, so queues build early.
  • Many small guesthouses take cash only; ask before arrival.
  • Inland Ribatejo summers hit the high 30s °C; shift sightseeing to morning and evening.
