Ezequiel Montes is a working agricultural town in a Querétaro valley, not a pretty colonial one. Its reason to exist for travellers is wine: La Redonda and Freixenet sit just outside town, and a dozen small wineries are spread across the surrounding 30 km. There are no tasting rooms in the centre, so a car or a hired taxi is what makes the stop work. Most people use it as a half-day on the Ruta de Vinos and sleep in Bernal or Tequisquiapan.

Getting around

A car is the practical way to reach the wineries: paved roads between towns, dirt access roads to some vineyards that are usually passable in a small car. Taxis are easy to find and can be hired by the day for a winery loop — agree the total and the hours before you set off. Coordinados runs hourly buses to Tequisquiapan (about 20 min) and Flecha Azul hourly to Querétaro (about 1 h); both stop at the basic bus terminal on I. Allende.

Watch out

Safety

The town is calm and the main risk is the road: rural, unlit and used by farm traffic. Drink at the wineries only with a designated driver or a hired taxi, and keep to toll roads (cuota) after dark.
  • Wineries are outside town and spread out: without a car or a hired taxi you cannot do the Ruta de Vinos.
  • Tasting rooms in the town centre are effectively absent; do not arrive expecting to walk between cellars.
  • Some vineyard access roads are dirt; they are usually fine in a small car but slow after rain.
  • Summer afternoon rain (Jun–Sep) can cut a winery visit short; go in the morning.
  • If you drink, do not drive: the roads between vineyards are rural and unlit at night.
