Palo Alto

Base here 1–2 nights for Stanford and downtown University Avenue; skip if you want big-city sights — San Francisco is 40 km (25 mi) north.

Palo Alto is a low-rise Silicon Valley suburb wrapped around Stanford University, 40 km south of San Francisco and 32 km north of San Jose. It is a base for campus, the Baylands wetlands and a walkable downtown, not a sightseeing city. Most visitors come for a campus visit, a conference or a night between San Francisco and San Jose.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Downtown and campus are walkable; Bryant Street and most streets have bike lanes. Caltrain links San Francisco and San Jose, and the free Marguerite shuttle runs to Stanford from the Caltrain station. Buses cover El Camino Real. A car helps for the Baylands, Foothills Park and the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Watch out

Safety

Palo Alto is one of the safer Bay Area cities; the real risks are petty theft from cars, traffic on El Camino Real and walking into East Palo Alto after dark.
  • East Palo Alto, across US 101, has a higher crime rate than Palo Alto; do not wander there at night.
  • Downtown parking is free but usually limited to 2 hours on business days.
  • Mountain lions are reported in the Baylands; do not walk the trails alone at dusk.
  • Sales tax is added at the till; the price on the tag is not what you pay.
