Day trip from Amsterdam or Utrecht: 4–6 hours covers the Markt, St. Janskerk glass and the canals. Sleep here only if you want the Thursday cheese market or a rail stop between Utrecht and Rotterdam.
Gouda is a compact Dutch city of about 71,000 people, 50 minutes from Amsterdam and under 20 minutes from Utrecht or Rotterdam by train. The historic centre sits inside a ring canal and is walkable in half a day. Its name is pronounced roughly "GHOW-da", with a throaty g, not the hard g of the cheese.
