Belfast is a small high-altitude farming town on the N4, about 2,025 m up and one of the coldest places in South Africa, with an average daily minimum near 7°C. It is known for trout fishing in cold streams and six stocked dams, tulip bulbs grown for export, and the Berg-en-Dal monument to an Anglo-Boer War battle. Most travellers use it as a one-night break on the Panorama Route run rather than a base.

Getting around

There is no useful public transport in town: arrive by car and drive between the monument, the dams and your guesthouse. The N4 is a toll road and the main link east to Mbombela and west to Pretoria. Fuel up in town before heading into the surrounding farm roads, some of which are gravel.

Watch out

Safety

Belfast is a quiet farming town and the main risks are practical: freezing winter nights, long empty N4 stretches without fuel or signal, and gravel farm roads after rain. Lock your car and keep valuables out of sight at viewpoints.
  • Winter nights drop to freezing and many rooms have no heating: ask before booking.
  • Trout fishing needs a permit and often a rod fee on private water: arrange it before you arrive.
  • Gravel farm roads turn slippery after rain; a normal sedan is fine in dry weather only.
  • Long empty stretches of the N4 have no fuel or phone signal: fill up and download offline maps.
