Ede is a mid-sized Dutch town of about 112,000 people on the western edge of the Veluwe, 25 minutes by train from Utrecht. The town itself is ordinary; its value is as a cheaper, better-connected base for Hoge Veluwe National Park, the Kröller-Müller Museum and the heath at Ginkelse Heide. Come for the forest and the bike paths, not for the streets.

Getting around

Ede-Wageningen is the intercity station, 3 km south of the centre; Ede Centrum is the small central station on regional trains. Local buses link the two and run frequently by day, rarely at night. Bikes are the real tool here: rental shops in town, flat lanes everywhere, and marked routes to the park.

Safety

Ede is a safe, quiet town by day. The two real issues are the station area after midnight and wild boar in the surrounding woods: keep clear of both.
  • Ede-Wageningen station is best avoided after midnight.
  • Wild boar live in the surrounding forest and heath: keep your distance and walk away, do not approach.
  • Sunday opening is limited; many non-essential shops close.
  • The A12 jams at rush hour if you drive in from Utrecht or Arnhem.
