Durham, North Carolina

Two nights is enough: one for downtown and Duke, one for a Bulls game or the Eno. Stay downtown or near Duke; a car helps for the rest.

Durham is the third city of North Carolina's Research Triangle, about 300,000 people, built on tobacco money and now on Duke medicine and tech. Old factories are lofts, restaurants and music rooms. Sights sit in three clusters — downtown, Duke's campus and the Eno River — so most trips work as two nights based downtown, with a car or ride-hailing for the gaps.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

GoDurham city buses converge on the Durham Station Transportation Center downtown and are fare-free through June 2027. GoTriangle regional buses link Durham with Chapel Hill, Raleigh and RTP for $2.50 a ride or a $5 day cap, paid via the Umo app. Outside those corridors, plan on a rental car or Uber/Lyft; downtown parking is tight on weekend evenings.

State capital museums and a bigger downtown; the train is the calmest option.

Small historic town on the Eno; pairs well with a river walk.

Worth it for the courthouse square and local food; thin without a car.

Little for a short trip; save it for a longer Triangle stay.

Cary

caution

Door to door: About 35 min

Suburban downtown and greenways; not a priority on a two-night trip.

Wake Forest

skip

A long suburban run for a short visit.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown

Walkable to the American Tobacco Campus, DPAC, Carolina Theatre and most restaurants; best for a car-free evening.

Ninth Street / Duke

Cafés, bookshops and a 10–15 min walk to Duke's East and West campuses; quieter at night.

Southpoint / I-40

Chain hotels and the area's biggest mall; only useful if you are driving and using Durham as a Triangle base.

Watch out

Safety

Central Durham is busy and generally safe in the day and early evening; use normal city sense after dark, keep to lit streets downtown and near Duke, and lock the car — property crime is the main risk.
  • GoDurham is fare-free through June 2027 — check the end date before you rely on it.
  • Never park against signed rules on the Duke or NCCU campuses: tickets and towing run 24/7.
  • Chapel Hill Road, Street and Boulevard are three different roads; check the full name before you drive.
  • The low railroad bridge on South Gregson Street downtown still catches over-height trucks and RVs — avoid it if your vehicle height is in doubt.
  • Summer heat and humidity are real; walk early or late.
