Kilkenny is a compact medieval city on the River Nore, small enough to walk end to end in 20 minutes but with a castle, two cathedrals, a round tower and a brewery tour packed into the Medieval Mile. Most visitors come from Dublin by train or bus in under two hours, stay one or two nights, and use it as a base for County Kilkenny's abbeys and caves. It is a city, not a town: locals will correct you.

Getting around

Walk: the centre is flat and compact, and the Medieval Mile runs from the castle to St Canice's in about 15 minutes. City Direct buses KK1 and KK2 cross the city every 30–60 min. Taxis wait at the railway station and use a meter. You need a car or taxi for Dunmore Cave, Kells Priory and Gowran.

Watch out

Safety

Kilkenny is a low-crime city and safe to walk at night in the centre. The real risks are uneven medieval pavements, rain-slicked streets and late-night noise around pub closing time.
  • Kilkenny is a city, not a town; calling it a town is a local shibboleth.
  • The castle keep and some sights run reduced hours outside summer: check before you travel.
  • There is no Park & Ride; if you drive in, use the Ormonde Street, Market Cross or Park Rite car parks.
  • Do not walk into MacDonagh Junction shopping centre expecting a passage to the station; enter from Dublin Road.
